At GSV Appreciation Comes Naturally!
Written by Scott Miller
Last week we had our annual summer employee appreciation picnic and it was a blast! The management team comes out, sets up, serves, clears tables and cleans up afterward. Garden Spot Village hosts a variety of employee appreciation events throughout the year and I know that, as an employee, the events make me feel valued. Appreciation is an element of the culture here at GSV, and I can honestly say I’ve never worked for any other organization that went to such lengths to show theirs for the staff. However, from a practical perspective it simply makes a lot of sense; appreciated employees are better employees. That appreciation flows through to the people we serve, how we interact with one another, and how we engage the community. This doesn’t mean we don’t face the challenges that come with a diverse team of 450 + employees, but I’m confident it helps make things better.
Behind the scenes, there are many things that take place on a regular basis. Just a few moments ago, before I stared writing this blog, a team member from Dining Services thanked me for his birthday card. Birthdays are another chance for GSV to acknowledge the staff; the entire senior management team signs and sends a birthday card to every employee each year, and birthday cakes are ordered once a month to put in the break rooms for everyone to share and celebrate.
The picnic typically takes place on the outdoor patio by The Creamery but with a rip roar of thunderstorms looming in the forecast, plan B went into action. Around 10:00 a.m. the grill, serving tables and seating were moved to the covered porch at the Village Square main entrance which allowed me to see everyone talking, laughing and enjoying lunch through my window. People were having a great time! Things wound down around 2:30 and everything was cleaned up in a flash. Then around 9:00 p.m. several of the management team returned, set it all back up, and had a picnic for the evening team from 10:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. so all the employees had an opportunity to enjoy the picnic too. In a couple of weeks, the employee appreciation summer picnic will happen at Maple Farm.
Personally, I see it all circling back to the culture at Garden Spot Village. In addition to a culture of opportunity, purpose, and community, there is a prevailing attitude of appreciation and service as everyone works together to live out our mission of enriching lives.
