Living in Lancaster County
Written by Scott Miller
One of the most convenient things about living at Garden Spot Village is the location. Lancaster County is filled to the brim with new experiences and opportunities that last a lifetime. Don’t take my word for it though, here are some trips and activities that you wouldn't expect from Lancaster County and the surrounding areas.
Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania
When was the last time you took a walk on the wild side? The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania is located in Lititz, about 40 minutes away from Garden Spot Village. The tours will take you into the 80+ acres of woodland with more than 40 wolves across several different packs. The Wolf Sanctuary currently operates as a non-profit, and provides the wolves with everything they need, from wide, open landscapes to food to veterinary care.
There are more than 40 wolves on the reservation, each one with their own story and unique personality. The tours are guided, and there’s even an option to take a tour under a full-moon. There’s something so serene about these animals; the howls that cut through the air will send chills down your spine. Make sure to bring a camera to capture these beautiful animals! This is an event for all ages, and kids are sure to enjoy watching the animals interact and play.
More information about the Wolf Sanctuary can be found at their website: Wolfsanctuary.org
Clipper Stadium and the Lancaster Barnstormers
Freshly roasted peanuts and Crackerjacks. The roar of the crowd. There’s nothing quite like a good game of baseball. Fortunately, Lancaster’s Clipper Stadium can provide all of that… and more! From the baseball games during the summer to the ice rink in the winter months, the Clipper Stadium is not just about hits and runs; it embodies the community of Lancaster County.
Parks and Hiking
It’s no secret that Pennsylvania Dutch Country is one of the most placid and tranquil areas on the East Coast. No matter what time of the year it is, Lancaster County has a multitude of both State and Private parks that promote an active lifestyle. Whether it’s training for our annual marathon or simply taking in the sights, I love how convenient and close we are to these parks!
One of my favorite parks in Lancaster County is the Susquehannock State Park. With over 10 different hiking trails of varying difficulties and grades, different overlooks, and a variety of wildlife, the Susquehannock State Park offers a family-friendly environment for all ages. Other parks close to Garden Spot Village include the Steinman Run Nature Preserve, the Lancaster Central Park, and Money Rocks County Park.
Fridays in Lancaster
Fridays are a reason to celebrate in Lancaster. The first Friday of every month is a special occasion for the entire city called “First Friday”. The entire city is swept up in creativity as artists, performers, and galleries embrace the arts. Mingle in the diversity and admire the artwork on display in this youthful and energetic festival. The third Friday of every month is called “Music Friday.” There are performances throughout the entire city as musicians perform in retailers and restaurants.
Educational Establishments and Museums
Of course, Lancaster County is known for it’s Amish and Mennonite presence. There are a variety of tours and museums that demonstrate their unique lifestyle. The Amish Village allows visitors to experience the farm-life first hand as they tour a one-room schoolhouse, a barn, blacksmith, smokehouse market, and more. Similarly, The Ephrata Cloister provides insight into one of the first spiritual communities in the United States.
There are a wealth of museums and educational facilities throughout Lancaster County as well. Whether it be the recently renovated North Museum of Natural History and Science in Lancaster city to the Railroad Museum in Strasburg, there is so much history to this area. For kids, the Hands-On House Children’s Museum provides a way for kids to play and learn.
As you can tell, it’s hard to be bored in Lancaster. With so many things to do, it’s no wonder that Lancaster is home to some of the happiest people in the United States. With Garden Spot Village being in the center of it all, we are proud to be situated just a short drive from these attractions. We have sponsored trips to some of these places in the past
