Bryan Morseman wins Garden Spot Village Marathon—again

April 11, 2015

Bryan Morseman, of Bath, N.Y., battled strong headwinds to win this year's Garden Spot Village Marathon, taking first place for the second year in a row. The marathon and half marathon drew some 1,200 runners of all ages—and held a few surprises. Running against fierce headwinds, Bryan Morseman, 29, of Bath, N.Y., finished first in the seventh annual Garden Spot Village Marathon on Saturday, April 11, with a time of 2:30:08. Morseman won last year’s event with a course record-setting time of 2:25:33.

Justyna Wilson, 39, of Bensalem, PA., finished first in the Women's Open Division and seventh overall, with a time of 3:13.34.

Mike Smith, 56, of Lebanon, Pa., won the Men’s Grand Masters Division for runners 50 years old and better, and was fourth overall, with a time of 3:03:54. Kelly Dworak, 52, of Carlilse, Pa., was the Women’s Grand Masters winner, finishing in 3:42:33.

The event attracted some 1,200 marathoners and half marathoners from 25 states and as far as Brazil.

“It has been a tough winter for training, but we didn’t see any drop-off in registrations this year, said race director Scott Miller, himself a marathoner, who is also chief marketing officer of the retirement community, which organizes and hosts the marathon. “I think the runners appreciate the hospitality they they’re shown by staff and volunteers from Garden Spot Village and the surrounding community, as well as the spectacular scenery of Lancaster County.”

The Garden Spot Village Marathon is believed to be the first marathon hosted by a retirement community. Beginning and ending on the community’s 104-acre campus, the USA Track & Field (USATF)-certified course runs along rural roads through scenic Lancaster County, Pa. The Garden Spot Village Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

To encourage a broad range of participation, the event recognizes individual achievement in five-year age categories to ages 80-plus, and the course remains open until the last participant has finished. On the eve of the race, Garden Spot Village hosted the second annual Lancaster YMCA Kids Marathon, which drew more than 125 participants ages 6 to 12.

First-place marathon finishers in each of four categories won cash awards: Men Overall, Women Overall, Men’s Grand Masters (50-plus) and Women’s Grand Masters (50-plus). The Garden Spot Village Marathon is unique in that the masters awards for runners 50-plus are the same amounts as the overall awards.
