Garden Spot Village Announces Preliminary Results

April 11, 2016

Bryan Morseman, 30, of Bath, NY, wins for the third time in a row at the Garden Spot Village Marathon.

In spite of the snowy weather, Bryan Morseman, 30, of Bath, N.Y., once again finished first in the eighth annual Garden Spot Village Marathon on Saturday, April 9, with a time of 2:39:39. For the 2014 and 2015 races, Morseman won with times of 2:25:33 and 2:30:08, respectively.

“Two years ago, it was beautiful weather and I did 2:25. Last year wasn’t as nice, and I finished in 2:35. This year… What do you have in store for next year?” Joked Morseman, who was lighthearted about the conditions for his most recent first place finish.

Jenny Bender, 23, of Hatfield, Pa., finished first in the Women’s Open Division and eleventh overall, with a time of 3:18:27.

Jeff Smucker, 50, of Centre Hall, Pa., won the Men’s Grand Masters Division for runners 50 years old and better, and was sixth overall, with a time of 3:07:33. Kelly Dworak, 53, of Carlisle, Pa., was the Women’s Grand Masters winner, finishing in 3:41:13.

An interesting turn of events saw the chip times and gun times of two runners in the Women’s Overall full marathon standings conflict. Hannah Smith, age 28, of Philadelphia, Pa., would place second and Sheena Wells, age 32, Bethlehem, Pa. third, using the gun time as the method to determine placement, as is standard practice for all marathons.

The event attracted some 1,300 marathoners and half marathoners from 32 states and as far as India.

“Though we had some unusual winter weather, race day was filled with enthusiasm and excitement,” said Scott Miller, race director and chief marketing officer for Garden Spot Village who is himself a marathoner. “It made the race even more of a memorable experience, for the runners, volunteers and event staff.”

The Garden Spot Village Marathon is believed to be the first marathon hosted by a retirement community. Beginning and ending on the community’s 104-acre campus, the USA Track & Field (USATF)-certified course runs along rural roads through scenic Lancaster County, Pa. The Garden Spot Village Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

To encourage a broad range of participation, the event recognizes individual achievement in five-year age categories to ages 80-plus, and the course remains open until the last participant has finished. On the eve of the race, Garden Spot Village hosted the Lancaster YMCA Kids Marathon, which drew more than 110 participants ages 6 to 12.

First-place marathon finishers in each of four categories won cash awards: Men Overall, Women Overall, Men’s Grand Masters (50-plus) and Women’s Grand Masters (50-plus). The Garden Spot Village Marathon is unique in that the masters awards for runners 50-plus are the same amounts as the overall awards.
