Author Janelle Shantz Hertzler to Sign Books at Garden Spot Village

Seasons of Solace describes the journey from loss and grief to acceptance.

Janelle Shantz Hertzler, of Akron, author of Seasons of Solace: A Story of Healing through Photos and Poems, will speak and sign copies of her book on Apr. 19 at Garden Spot Village.

NEW HOLLAND, Pa. — Apr. 5, 2010 — Janelle Shantz Hertzler, of Akron, lost her husband suddenly as the result of an accident in 2005. She wrote Seasons of Solace, a book of poetry, as a way of processing her grief.

Hertzler will discuss her spiritual journey from grief to acceptance, and read from and sign copies of her book on Mon., Apr. 19, beginning at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave. Books will be available for purchase, and Hertzler will sign copies following the presentation. The event is free and open to the public.

“Her poems and readings are very real and powerful, because they come out of real life,” said Marian Harnish, associate chaplain at the retirement community. “I know her story speaks powerfully to people regardless of their age or their loss.”

Hertzler and her husband, John, were working with a Mennonite organization in Thailand when John was hit head-on by a drunk driver. Hertzler and the couple’s 18-month-old son, Micah, returned to Pennsylvania, where she enrolled in a master’s program in Conflict Transformation at Eastern Mennonite University and began attending monthly retreats at Kairos School of Spiritual Formation.

Seasons of Solace: A Story of Healing through Photos and Poems, is about Hertzler’s grief journey and struggle to find healing. Hertzler also has a website devoted to grief and healing, at journey-through-grief.com.

To reach the Garden Spot Village chapel, enter the community and follow the signs to the visitors’ center. Inside the building, follow signs to the chapel. For more information, contact Marian Harnish at 717-355-6235 or email MHarnish@gardenspotvillage.org.
