Concert to Celebrate Elizabeth Sauder Martin's 100th Birthday

Centenarian's daughter to sing at Garden Spot Village

Mezzo-soprano Rebecca Martin will present a concert to celebrate the 100th birthday of her grandmother, Elizabeth Sauder Martin, on Sun., Nov. 1, at 4 p.m., in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The public is welcome.

NEW HOLLAND, Pa. — Oct. 5, 2009 — Rebecca Martin, an accomplished mezzo-soprano from Nuremberg, Germany, will present a concert in honor of her grandmother, Elizabeth Sauder Martin, on Sun., Nov. 1, at 4 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave.

Accompanied by pianist Marvin Blickenstaff, Rebecca Martin will perform a variety of classic numbers in English and German, including works by Handel, Schubert, Copland and Mendelssohn.

Elizabeth Sauder Martin, a resident of Garden Spot Village, turns 100 on Oct. 31. She has seven children, 23 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. She has a strong interest in genealogy and in the last few years she has published two books on her family’s history.

Rebecca Martin was born in Saigon, Vietnam, and grew up in Allentown, Pa. She studied piano and voice at Goshen College in Indiana and moved to Germany in 1988. She joined opera the opera company in Dessau, where she sang the lead role in Rossini’s Cinderella, and later joined the Nuremberg opera house, where she added many roles to her repertoire. She has recorded with the Windsbach Boys Choir and has taught singing at the Music University in Nuremburg.

The concert is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated.

On the morning of the concert, Elizabeth Martin’s family will lead the worship service in the Garden Spot Village chapel, beginning at 10 a.m.
