Garden Spot Village to Host Exploritas Educational Program
March 2nd program to explore America’s national parks.
NEW HOLLAND, Pa. —Jan 11, 2010 — Garden Spot Village will host “The National Park Service: An American Legacy” on Tues., Mar. 2, on the campus of the retirement community at 433 S. Kinzer Ave. The interactive lecture/discussion is an Exploritas program developed and offered by Elderhostel, Inc., the not-for-profit world leader in lifelong learning and educational travel.
“Exploritas programs empower adults to explore the world as a way to discover more about themselves. That strongly supports our mission to enrich people’s lives,” said Colleen Musselman, director of life enrichment at Garden Spot Village. “We’re proud to host such a top-quality program.”
The National Park Service program is one of Exploritas’s Day of Discovery on Campus programs, which are half-day academic enrichment events designed to make lifelong learning available without the rigors of travel.
This thought-provoking program will look at America’s national parks, their place in history and relevance today, their heroes and defenders, and national parks for the future. Facilitators will lead a discussion on the tug of war between progress and preservation. The program also offers a suggested reading list for further study, including such titles as Wilderness and the American Mind by Roderick Frazier Nash, Regreening the National Parks by Michael Frome and The National Parks: America’s Best Idea by Dayton Duncan and Ken Burns.
The program is slated to begin at 9:15 a.m. and run until 12:45 p.m., followed by lunch. Registration is $46 per person and includes lunch at Garden Spot Village.
The event is open to the public. Pre-registration is required. To register, call 800-454-5768 or visit www.exploritas.org and search for program 19057RJ.
Garden Spot Village is located within easy driving distance of several national parks, including Hopewell Furnace, Gettsyburg Battlefield, Valley Forge and five national parks in the Philadelphia area. For more information, see www.nps.gov/state/PA/index.htm.
