Garden Spot Village to Host Exploritas Educational Program
12-week NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program starts Apr. 12
NEW HOLLAND, Pa. —Mar. 1, 2010 — People who care for an individual with mental illness face daily stresses that can affect their own health and relationships. Family members, partners and friends who care for someone with serious mental illness can learn how to support these individuals while maintaining their own well-being through a free educational program being offered at Garden Spot Village beginning Mon., Apr. 12. The National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) Family-to-Family Education Program will meet each Monday for 12 weeks from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in the Concord Room at the retirement community, located at 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland.
“This course is taught by a team of trained NAMI family member volunteers who know what it’s like to have a loved one struggling with a brain disorder,” said Karen Horning, director of social services at Garden Spot Village. “We welcome the opportunity to host the program and encourage family caregivers in our area to take advantage of the assistance this program offers.”
More than 115,000 family members have graduated from this national program. The course provides current information on major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, borderline personality disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and co-occurring brain disorders and addictive disorders. It also provides information on medications, side effects and strategies for medication adherence, as well as the latest research on treatments to promote recovery. It includes workshops on problem solving and communication, strategies for handling crises and relapse, and locating supports and services within the community. It also teaches caregivers how to cope with worry, stress and emotional overload.
The NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program is sponsored by NAMI Pennsylvania and NAMI of Lancaster.
All instruction and course materials are free to class participants. Class is limited to 20 participants, and pre-registration is required.
