Garden Spot Village Helps Residents and Neighbors Prevent Identity Theft
Shred-it Day slated for Fri., May 15 at the retirement community
NEW HOLLAND, Pa. —May 6, 2009 — As many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year, according to Federal Trade Commission estimates. One way that thieves obtain confidential information is by taking documents from trash cans and dumpsters. To help fight this crime, Garden Spot Village is holding its annual Shred-it Day on Fri., May 15, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on its campus at 433 S. Kinzer Ave.
“We feel that it is important for people to safeguard themselves from scams and fraud. Offering the Shred-it service to our residents and the community is just one way to help others protect themselves against predators of this nature,” said Colleen Musselman, director of life enrichment.
Garden Spot Village held its first Shred-it Day for residents in 2007. “Last year we invited the New Holland community to take advantage of this great service,” Musselman said. “This year we’re offering a special soft pretzel treat to our first 100 customers.”
Residents and the general public are invited to bring boxes and bags of confidential documents, such as old financial records, legal documents and receipts to the event. Magazines, newspapers or books cannot be shredded. A donation of $5 per box or bag of documents is suggested.
The shredding will be done by the Central PA/Lancaster branch of Shred-it, a Securit company, using a cross-cut shredding process, which reduces documents to confetti-sized pieces. All shredding takes place inside a secured, caged environment inside the Shred-it truck. The truck will be located in a roped-off lot along Weaver Boulevard on the Garden Spot Village campus.
