Garden Spot Village Announces "Meet the Churches" 2010 Schedule

Popular speaker series explores faith traditions

NEW HOLLAND, Pa. — June 2, 2010 — Garden Spot Village is reprising its popular “Meet the Churches” series of free lectures and discussions featuring representatives of various faith communities. The general public is invited to attend the programs, which will meet Monday evenings from July 12 through Aug. 30, beginning at 7 p.m., in the chapel of the retirement community at 433 S. Kinzer Ave.

“Our residents are interested in learning more about the various faith traditions represented among us and also about the faith of those who are dissimilar,” said Chet Yoder, director of pastoral care at Garden Spot Village. Yoder coordinates the series with Paul Winters, a resident of the faith-based retirement community. “Life Enrichment events like this one nurture a culture of growth and transformation, which is typical of the Garden Spot Village community. They also offer an opportunity for interaction with our neighbors in the Eastern Lancaster community, while providing quality programming of interest to a wide audience.”

Each session features a different pastor or religious leader from a local congregation. Speakers share about the history of their particular denomination as well as their congregation. A time of discussion follows each presentation. No presentation is scheduled Aug. 2.

The scheduled presentations are:

  • July 12      Robert Rhodes, formerly of the Hutterites
  • July 19      Pastor Dean Jurgen, Lititz Moravian Church
  • July 26      Joe Moore, Lancaster Friends Meeting (Quakers)
  • Aug. 9      Bishop David Sauder, Old Order River Brethren
  • Aug. 16      Bishop Nathan Yoder, Brethren-In-Christ Church
  • Aug. 23      Emmanuel Esh, Charity Christian Fellowship
  • Aug. 30      Ben Lapp, New Order Amish

The not-for-profit retirement community is home to all faiths and backgrounds. It is affiliated with the Lancaster Mennonite Conference of the Mennonite Church, the Atlantic Coast Conference of the Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Health Services. The community’s mission is “to enrich the lives of older adults as an expression of Christ’s love.”

Meet the Churches is open to residents of Garden Spot Village and the general public. The event is free. No pre-registration is required. For more information, please call Chet Yoder, director of pastoral care, at 717-355-6203.
