Ken Sensenig to Present “The Third Chapter of The Nickel Mines Story”

Presentation is part of the Mennonite Central Committee series at Garden Spot Village

NEW HOLLAND, Pa. — Apr. 24, 2009 — The compassionate response of the Amish community to the murder-suicide at the West Nickel Mines School in Bart Township on Oct. 2, 2006, opened many eyes to the power of faith and forgiveness. Ken Sensenig, assistant director of the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) East Coast will share “The Third Chapter of the Nickel Mines Story” and discuss the continuing effect of Amish forgiveness and its impact around the world. The talk will be held on Mon., Apr. 27, beginning at 7 p.m., in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave.

In his role at MCC, Sensenig relaties closely with congregations all along the East Coast, including Old Order Amish and Mennonites in Lancaster. He visited many Amish community members following the shooting. At the time, he told the Disaster News Network, “What impresses me is how strong this community is in the face of terrible tragedy.”

Sensenig is also a historian and an accomplished storyteller. He will weave recent stories of forgiveness into his presentation on Monday evening.

Sensenig’s presentation is part of a series of discussions at Garden Spot Village led by representatives of MCC.

“As a faith-based community, we are always looking for new ways to minister to the spiritual needs of our residents and our neighbors,” said Chet Yoder, director of pastoral care at the retirement community. “For example, in addition to worship services and weekly bible studies, we offer continuing education classes of spiritual input and various support groups for residents and the broader community.”

The final presentation in the MCC series will be “MCC Embraces the City,” presented by Ruth Keidel Clemens, executive director of MCC East Coast. It will be held in the Garden Spot Village Chapel on May 11 at 7 p.m.

For more information, contact Yoder at 717-355-6203 or e-mail cyoder@gardenspotvillage.org.
