Fulton Theatre and Garden Spot Village: A Natural Partnership
Written by Scott Miller
A little over two years ago Fran Rapp, a leader of the Garden Spot Village acting guild, suggested that we consider becoming a sponsor of the Fulton Theatre in downtown Lancaster. Garden Spot has always believed in the arts and supports a variety of local performing and musical groups. There had been discussions with the Fulton Theatre over the years, however, it was the influence of residents that tipped the scale and resulted in the partnership.
And what a wonderful partnership it is! Our sponsorship includes tickets to the shows in addition to mentions in the playbill, etc. On Thursday, November 29, 12 residents and 12 future residents left the Garden Spot Village Apartment Suites Lobby at 12:30pm to travel together to the Fulton to see 42nd Street. Sitting among the travelers I noticed consistent comments, “Isn’t it wonderful to be able to sit back, not worry about the traffic or how to get there and let someone else drive?” The conversation was lively and included a lot of laughter. People were having a good time and we had not even yet arrived!
Once inside, Jeff Coon took us on a tour up into the gallery and shared some of the history of the theater. The building actually started out as a prison, imagine that! Plus, like most old theaters it reportedly has its own harmless ghost.
We had amazing seats in the orchestra section and the show was absolutely fabulous! After the show a number of people said they had seen 42nd Street on Broadway, myself included, and it was every bit as good, if not better. The acting and the singing were extraordinary. The dancing! The dancing was phenomenal. It’s like the tap dancing show of the century. It was so much fun to watch. My wife and I have tickets for Saturday night and I can’t wait to see it again!
Garden Spot will feature a trip to each new show for the rest of the season. Sign up is always first come, first serve. If you are a resident you know how the process works. If you are a future resident, be sure to keep your eye on the Friday event emails. That is how we will let you know about your next opportunity to participate in one of the community trips to the Fulton Theatre.
If you have been to the Fulton Theatre lately you know that their productions are some of the best to ever hit the stage and 42nd Street is no exception. This is a show you won’t want to miss.
