The Community Meal Outreach by Garden Spot Village Continues to Bless Many

Written by Samantha Stone

In March 2017, a group of volunteers from Garden Spot Village, led by Fred and Eileen Eck and Don and Lois Aldrich, hosted the very first community meal at the CrossNet Youth Ministries building, located on Franklin Street in New Holland.

Every 4th Monday of the month since then, as made possible by the wonderful generosity of many residents and team members, Garden Spot Village has blessed the local community with free, delicious hot meals, which are organized and prepared by Garden Spots’ Sodexo team.

God has been gracious, and residents and team members have shown incredible generosity in funding this ministry monthly by donating funds at the registers in The Harvest Table, The Coop and Refresh Coffee Bar. In cooperation with CrossNet Ministries, Garden Spot Village has provided nearly 9,000 free meals over the past four years, and over 70 residents and staff members have donated their time and energy to this charitable cause.

CrossNet expanded the program to include a free mobile clothing closet provided by Anchored Ministries of Elverson.

In March 2020, the free meal shifted from in-person, sit-down meals to a COVID-friendly, drive-by format. Through the remainder of 2020 and most of 2021, volunteers handed out hundreds of meals each month. Don reports, “We hope to return to in-person, sit-down meals this fall.”

Residents and team members can continue to support the Swipe Out Hunger ministry by donating meal dollars at the registers at The Harvest Table, The Coop and Refresh Coffee Bar. Cash donations are also being accepted to support this ministry.
