Garden Spot Village ALIVE (Active Lifelong Learners in Vital Engagements) invites the community to learn about “Discipleship: Following Christ Here and Around the World” a six-session course beginning Oct. 8, 2012.
NEW HOLLAND, Pa. — Sept. 18, 2012 — Garden Spot Village ALIVE (Active Lifelong Learners in Vital Engagements) invites the community to learn about “Discipleship: Following Christ Here and Around the World.” The six-session class will meet on Mondays from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 8, 15, 22, 29 and Nov. 5 and 12 in the Garden Towers classroom at Garden Spot Village at 433 S. Kinzer Ave. in New Holland.
“The basis of Christian discipleship is Christ’s call for his disciples to be with him and follow him—but fellowships of believers must work out what it means to follow Christ in their own local contexts,” said Chet Yoder, director of pastoral services at Garden Spot Village. “This course examines Christian discipleship throughout history and in different cultures.”
The text for the course will be Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream by David Platt. Topics will include the context of discipleship in the New Testament, discipleship from the time of Constantine, the Reformation, the variety of forms of discipleship around the world, discipleship in western culture today and the blur between State and Church, and discipleship as a personal and communal choice.
The instructor will be Donald R. Jacobs, Ph.D., director emeritus of Mennonite Christian Leadership Foundation. From 1954 until 1973, Jacobs and his wife, Anna Ruth, served as Mennonite missionaries in Kenya and Tanzania, where he founded the Mennonite Theological College. He later directed overseas programs for Eastern Mennonite Missions. He is the author of Pilgrimage in Mission, Consider Jesus and A Gentle Wind of God. He holds a doctorate in religion and education from New York University.
The program is sponsored by Garden Spot Village, Eastern Mennonite Seminary at Lancaster, Weaverland Mennonite Church and Bowmansville Mennonite Church.
The cost is $20, which includes the textbook. Continuing education units are available through Eastern Mennonite Seminary for an additional fee. Garden Spot Village residents may register for the course at Resident Services. Members of the general public may register by calling 717-355-6159. Please register by Monday, Oct. 1.
