New Holland Band: Art of the March, Third Edition
April 25 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Join the New Holland Band for the third edition of their popular program – – The Art of the March. Esteemed as the nation’s 2nd oldest civilian concert band, the New Holland Band will take you on a journey through this magnificent art form with this performance concentrating on the marches of “The March King”, John Philip Sousa. The program will include some of Sousa’s most popular compositions including “Black Horse Troop”, “El Capitan”, “Hands Across the Sea” and “The Liberty Bell”.
There is a published piano arrangement of Sousa’s “The Honored Dead” which lists it as being composed in 1876. However, when President Ulysses S. Grant died in 1885, Sousa arranged the piece for band at the request of his publisher. While the piece is rarely performed, “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band played the march in Sousa’s funeral procession in 1932.
Sousa composed over 125 marches during his illustrious career, and we look forward to presenting a selection from his impressive catalog along with the stories behind the compositions during The Art of the March: Third Edition.
Tickets are required for admission.
