Garden Spot Village Announces Opening of Second Thistledown Cooperative Living House

May 20, 2025

Inspired by Research and Community Success

Garden Spot Village is excited to announce the opening of its second Cooperative Living House, a unique residential model that fosters community, independence, and shared living among older adults. A special blessing and open house will be held on Friday, May 30 at 10am, inviting the public to tour the new home and celebrate this milestone.

This new Thistledown Cooperative Living House builds on the success of the first, which opened in 2018. That pioneering home was the result of a bold vision to reimagine senior living through a shared affordable housing model that does not rely on government subsidies while promoting mutual support and meaningful relationships. Following its opening, a post-occupancy study conducted by Kansas State University provided valuable insights into the lived experiences of residents. The findings from that study directly influenced the design and features of the second house, ensuring it reflects the changing needs and preferences of its future residents.

“We are thrilled to open a second Cooperative Living House that not only honors the spirit of the original but also incorporates thoughtful improvements based on real-life feedback,” said Wendy Nagle, Director of Mission Advancement at Garden Spot Village. “This model continues to demonstrate how intentional community living can enhance well-being and quality of life.”

The new home features private bedrooms and bathrooms for each resident, alongside shared living spaces designed to encourage connection and collaboration. From architectural refinements to enhanced accessibility and communal amenities, every detail was shaped by the voices of those who lived in the first house.

The blessing and open house on May 30 will include remarks from Garden Spot Village leadership, a tour of the new home, and light refreshments. All are welcome to attend and learn more about this innovative approach to aging in community.
